A Case for Celebration

I have been merrily sewing stitches gently down the seam for five years. Admittedly, some stitches have not gone quite so gently, but this has not lessened the joy in my quiltmaking journey. In fact, I think those contrary stitches have made the journey more memorable.

I will never forget the fellow retreater who ran into the bathroom, slammed the door, and screamed some familiar yet nonsensical syllables before returning to her sewing machine. When asked what had happened, she explained that she had just sewn most of the first long seam of a Jelly Roll Race quilt with her bobbin thread out on unanticipated leave.

When bobbin thread comes up a few inches short, give thanks that it is noticed before nearly 800 inches of non-seam has been sewn. It happens to the best of us, so let's make the best of it when it happens. If a bobbin comes up short, break out into applause. Commend the sewist for all the stitches that it took to empty the bobbin in the first place, and give out a prize. Wouldn't that make this common frustration a significantly more positive experience?

Pineapple Jelly - one of my first quiltmaking endeavors

Five years ago, Pineapple Jelly was one of the first quilts that I made. The fabrics were purchased as 5-inch squares and 2 1/2-inch strips, and I cut them into smaller squares and narrow strips before assembling the blocks. I quickly developed a love of small, scrappy pieces in quilt designs.

I wonder where the next five years of my quiltmaking journey will lead.
